There’s a lot we can learn from past generations, and The Veterans Project hopes to preserve those lessons for years to come.

“It’s a collection of intimate one-on-one conversations with a variety of war survivors, providing a glimpse into their most vivid, and often difficult, memories during their time of service. The stories promise to educate, inspire and touch viewer’s hearts. “The goal of this project is to provide veterans the opportunity to express their feelings to help Canadians understand the depth of their struggle and sacrifice,” explains Jocelyn Vieth, Digital Storyteller and Founder, Digital Legacy.

“I wanted an interactive way to showcase and share the stories of veterans with younger generations,” Vieth told Vancity Buzz. “In today’s day and age we’re very visual and we want things that are compelling and that we can connect with.”

Vieth says that by speaking one-on-one with veterans, she was able to get a new perspective on what they went through, and how it affected them.

“I was just able to connect in a way that I’ve never been able to connect with veterans and with what actually took place during the war,” she says. “I feel like it brings it to life through their eyes… understanding their struggle and sacrifice in that experience.”

By speaking with Veterans Vieth hopes to preserve the stories of these people, and give  younger generations an opportunity to understand what those before them went through to give them the life they are able to enjoy today.

“I think there’s a disconnect right now, and my main goal is to try and bridge that gap and help to connect younger generations and older generations,” she says. “I think there’s so much to be learned from their experiences.”

“This collection intends to bridge the generational disconnect between those who experienced war first-hand and those who have become accustomed to the values and beliefs which soldiers fought to preserve. In the video, the veterans define ‘sacrifice’ and share what they hope younger generations will remember.”

Use of the video is encouraged to keep these memories alive.
